Turning the Kentucky Derby into a Dance Party: My Experience at Columbus Derby Day

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of DJing at nearly every major sporting event you can think of. But this past weekend, I added a surprising new entry to that list: the Kentucky Derby—or more specifically, the Columbus Derby Day watch party, the premier Derby event in Central Ohio.

Hosted on the rooftop of the stunning new venue, The Overlook by BBI Events, this wasn’t your average watch party. Columbus Derby Day is a philanthropic celebration benefiting The Five Strong Foundation, a nonprofit that empowers individuals with developmental disabilities through athletics, camaraderie, and inclusion. Naturally, hearing from some of the board members and organizers added meaning and depth to the day.

Despite rain in the forecast, the rooftop vibes were strong. From the moment I arrived, I could tell this was going to be a special event. MMJ Events, one of Columbus’ top planning teams, managed the production—so the decor was next-level as always. I also got to work alongside my wife Jessy of The Howard Brand, which made the event even more personal. We carved out a moment to do a mini photoshoot together (shoutout to the oversized chess set—yes, I’m a bit of a chess nerd).

Cameron Mitchell Catering provided the food and bartending, and as expected, they absolutely nailed it—elevated flavors, polished service, and an overall experience that made guests feel like VIPs.

Derby Vibes Meet Elevated Energy

Going into the event, I didn’t expect a full-blown dance party. After all, the Kentucky Derby isn’t exactly known for its club vibes. But Esther from MMJ told me that people danced last year, so I came prepared.

For the first couple of hours, I kept it classy with a blend of EDM and house—something elevated but not overbearing. I briefly considered leaning into country music (because, you know, Kentucky), but the energy felt more Miami than Louisville. Guests came dressed to impress—dapper suits, bold hats, vibrant dresses—and the mood was more rooftop lounge than southern soiree.

Once the race ended (blink and you’ll miss it), the party shifted. After a quick raffle for guests who picked the winning horse, I turned up the music—and the dance floor came alive. It wasn’t a full-on club takeover, but I never lost the crowd either.

A Surprising Setlist and a Country Finale

What caught me off guard was the age range. There were more young people than I anticipated, which meant artists like Drake, John Summit, and Dom Dolla got strong reactions. The energy leaned fresh and current, so I followed the crowd, read the room, and kept the dance floor engaged.

Then, in the final 15 minutes, I got a request for some country. So I wrapped things up with a mini country set that brought just the right amount of Kentucky flavor to close the night.

Final Thoughts

Columbus Derby Day was a standout event—not just for the cause it supported, but for the energy and elegance it brought together. The venue was gorgeous, the crowd was vibrant, and the vendors were truly top-tier.

If you’re planning a high-end event, watch party, or sporting celebration and want someone who can elevate the atmosphere and get even the “non-dancers” moving, I’m your guy.
