Last weekend was a whirlwind of activity, a true test of a DJ’s endurance and adaptability. I had the honor of spinning tunes at three incredible weddings, each with its own unique vibe and set of challenges.
Thursday: Pop-Punk Paradise
The week kicked off at Understory, a venue with a raw, industrial feel. This couple was all about pop-punk, and I was ready to take them back to the good old days. As the first notes of Blink-182 echoed through the room, the crowd erupted. It was a blast from the past, a nostalgic journey through the genre’s most iconic songs.
Friday: A Taylor Swift Fairytale
On Friday, I found myself at the picturesque Jorgensen Farms. This couple was head over heels for Taylor Swift, and I was tasked with curating a setlist that would have even Taylor herself swooning. From “Love Story” to “Shake It Off,” the dance floor was packed all night long. The challenge here was to balance the iconic hits with some lesser-known tracks to keep the Swifties on their toes.
Saturday: Elegant Evening
Saturday’s event took place at the stunning Swan Lake Event Center. This couple had a more traditional taste, but they still wanted to keep the party going. I carefully selected a mix of classic love songs and modern dance hits. The challenge here was to create a seamless transition between the different genres, ensuring that the energy remained high throughout the night.
Behind the Scenes: The Logistics of Love
While the music and the dancing might seem like the main event, there’s a lot of behind-the-scenes work that goes into making a wedding a success. As a DJ, I’m responsible for everything from setting up the equipment to managing the crowd.
For this triple-threat weekend, the biggest challenge was undoubtedly the logistics. Loading, setting up, and breaking down equipment three times in three days is no easy feat. It requires careful planning, physical endurance, and a lot of coffee.
To stay focused and energized, I had to prioritize my mental and physical health. I made sure to get enough sleep, eat healthy meals, and take breaks when needed. I also created detailed setlists for each event, which helped me stay organized and focused.
The Power of Preparation
The key to a successful DJ performance is preparation. By spending time curating playlists, learning new songs, and practicing my mixing skills, I was able to deliver seamless sets that kept the crowds engaged.
I also believe in the power of adaptability. As a DJ, you have to be able to read the room and adjust your setlist accordingly. If the crowd isn’t responding to a particular song, I’m not afraid to switch things up.
