Love is always a cause for celebration, but few celebrations are quite as unique as a surprise wedding! Recently, I had the pleasure of being the DJ and MC at Emmett and Patrick’s surprise wedding reception at The Grand Event Center in Grandview, Columbus, Ohio. This unique event was all about creating an unforgettable experience for the happy couple and their unsuspecting guests, and let me tell you, it was a night to remember!
The Challenge: Setting the Stage for a Surprise
The biggest challenge of this event was, of course, the surprise itself. Emmett and Patrick wanted their guests to believe they were attending a birthday party. This meant that I had to carefully curate the music and entertainment to create a fun and festive atmosphere, all while subtly building anticipation for the big reveal.
The Solution: Building Anticipation Through Music
To achieve this, I started the night with some classic 90’s house tunes so we had a dance floor even before dinner started. I kept the mood light and celebratory, while slowly weaving in the most line dances that I have ever played at a party. They we’re a huge hit!
The Reveal: A Moment of Pure Joy
When the moment finally arrived, and Emmett and Patrick announced their marriage to the surprised and delighted crowd, the energy in the room was electric. It was so cool to see guests slowly realize what was happening. It was a truly heartwarming moment, and I was honored to be a part of it.
Keeping the Party Going: A Night of Celebration
After the initial shock had worn off, it was time to start dinner and another dance set soon followed! Emmett and Patrick had shared their favorite songs with me beforehand, and I used this list to create a custom playlist that kept the dance floor all night long. From classic love songs to modern chart toppers, there was something for everyone. The highlight of the night, according to the couple, was the song “100% Pure Love” by Crystal Waters, which became their unofficial wedding anthem.
More Than Just Music: Capturing Special Moments
In addition to providing the music and entertainment, I also took some video footage of the evening. This was not a request from Emmett and Patrick, but since they didn’t have a videographer, I has no issue filling that gap. It was nice to film the event without any pressure. Any footage I got was just bonus memories.
