The energy in Columbus, Ohio was electric on a recent playoff night for the Columbus Crew! Lower.com Field buzzed with anticipation as fans donned their black and gold, ready to cheer on The Crew against the New York Red Bulls. And at the heart of this electric atmosphere? DJ AXCESS!
As the on-field DJ and MC for the night, I wasn’t just spinning tunes – I was an integral part of the Crew fan experience. There is nothing like performing in front of 20,000 people and I had to make sure the music and my announcements were perfect. I want our team to have every advantage going into the game.
The moment fans stepped into Lower.com Field, they were transported into a sea of black and gold. From the face paint to the meticulously decorated signs, the Crew faithful were ready to roar. I came prepared with a crate of sing-a-longs and high energy remixes from artists like Tiesto, Martin Garrix, and other stadium anthems.
Throughout the pre-game show, I practiced my lines, and even tried to predict what would happen if we went off-script and the ways I would recover. I did a very focused voice warm-up and made sure my voice was ready to deliver high-energy announcements without yelling or screaming into the mic.
Being a DJ is about more than just hitting play. It’s about reading the crowd and thinking on your feet. One of the highlights of the night involved the ceremonial first kick. The young girl who kicked the ball at the previous game returned for another shot at glory. Unfortunately, her first attempt sailed wide.
This could have been a flat moment. But instead, I saw an opportunity to turn it into a crowd-pleasing spectacle. I raised the mic and asked the crowd, “Should we give her another try?” The response was a thunderous “YES!” that echoed through the stadium.
With the crowd amped up, the young girl stepped back up and confidently sent the ball sailing into the net. The entire stadium erupted in cheers, the near-miss transformed into a triumphant moment. This is the magic of live events – adapting, improvising, and creating shared experiences that create core memories for fans of all ages.
And then came the moment everyone was waiting for – the start of the match! The stadium erupted in celebration, a joyous cacophony fueled by the music and the pure passion of the fans. It was a moment of pure, unadulterated joy, and to be a part of creating that experience is truly a privilege. As the game unfolded, I got to watch an intense match.
